1. Sign in

 2. Ad type

Next you will select the ad type.  Because you want to create a standard Google ad unit, choose the Ad Unit radio button.  It is recommended that you enable the widest selection of ads to display on your pages so that there is some kind of ad for every visitor that comes through your site.  To select this simply leave the drop-down set to Text and Image Ads which should be the default.

3. Customize ads

You have to remember that every person that uses Google AdSense is going through the exact same process.  Therefore, this is where you want to take the time to customize your ads a bit.  You want your site to be your site, not look like everyone else’s on the internet.  Try to customize your ads as best as possible to match the feel and look of your site.  This is also where you can select the size of your ads.  Typically larger and wider ads perform better.

4. Color selection

Continuing with the customization of your ads, next you will select the colors of your ads that will be placed on your site.  You have the option of selecting one of the predefined colors or you can create your own color.  After selecting the color you think works best, you can preview it to see if it meets your standards.

5. Add a channel

Adding a channel will give you the ability to track the performance of your ad units.  It is vital that you add a channel because it is impossible to know how well certain ads are doing for you without being able to track the performance.  Adding a channel allows you to see which ads you should keep and which you should drop. 

6. Name your AdSense unit

This is the step where you will be asked to name your AdSense ad unit.  This gives you the ability to change the appearance or setting of your ad easily in the future if you decide you want a different feel for certain ads.  Make sure to select a name that you will be able to remember in the future.

7. Get ad code

After all of the steps above have been completed, you will be given the ad code for your AdSense ad unit.  You can click anywhere inside the grey box and copy the code.  Then, take the code and paste it into the HTML source code of your site and you will be off and running.
